Interview coaching

Interview coaching in English.

Practice interviews and clear feedback. For people who will be interviewed in a language that is not their first, and for native English speakers who want to interview better.

The problem

The answer is correct. The impression is not.

Most people can describe their experience clearly in their own language. In an interview in English, the same answer takes longer, uses simpler words, and sounds less certain than the person really is.

Interviewers do not usually separate language from ability. When you pause, they hear doubt. When your answer is short, they think you have less experience. These sessions are about closing that difference.

Native speakers have the same problem for a different reason. If English is your first language, the words are not the difficulty. Structure is. Strong candidates still lose good jobs because the answer wandered, the example was weak, or the best part of their experience never came out.

How the sessions work

Fifty minutes, online, with feedback during the session.

You answer real interview questions for the job you are applying for. After each answer I explain what an interviewer would have understood, and then we practise the answer again.

There is no homework, no written report and no course to finish. You get the feedback while you can still remember your own answer, which is the only time it is useful.

What we study

Four areas.

Practice interviews

Real questions for the job and the company, asked properly. This includes the questions that people most often answer badly.

Competency questions

Large companies ask you to describe a real situation from your past: a conflict, a mistake, a deadline you nearly missed. I teach you the STAR method, which is a simple way to build the answer — the Situation, the Task, the Action you took, and the Result. Most people describe the situation for too long and forget the result, which is the part the interviewer is listening for.

Preparing your answers

The difficult client. The gap in your work history. The reason you left your last job. Salary. We prepare these answers and practise them until they sound natural.

Your CV in English

Written feedback on your CV. Most are translated from another language, and you can see it in the verbs and in phrases that sound modest in one language but weak in another. This is charged separately.

Experience

Twenty years of interviewing, hiring and training.

Before I taught English I worked in business for more than twenty years, in sales, marketing and management. Part of that work was interviewing people, hiring them and training them, including competency-based interviews where every candidate is scored against the same list. I know what the person on the other side is writing down.

I have also been interviewed in a country that was not my own, in a language I was still learning. That is the same position most of my students are in.

Because of this I can explain why an answer did not work, and not only whether the grammar was correct.

We also study what is expected, because this is different in different countries. The confidence expected in the United States is not the same as in Germany or in the United Kingdom. The same answer can sound confident in one country and proud in another.
